IIT Madras Fellowship 2026: PhD Holders Eligible to Apply

  • IT Madras has invited applications for its Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowship 2026. Applicants must have completed their PhD within five years, meet the age and publication requirements, and secure consent from an IIT Madras faculty member before applying.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has invited applications for its Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowship programme 2026, offering researchers an opportunity to continue advanced research at the institute. The programme is open to candidates who have completed their PhD within the past five years.

According to the eligibility guidelines, applicants must be below 32 years of age on the date of joining. A relaxation of five years is available for SC, ST and women candidates, while OBC-NCL candidates are eligible for a three-year relaxation.

Applicants must also have at least two papers published in Q1 journals, with the candidate listed as the primary contributor. Researchers who have submitted their PhD thesis but are awaiting the degree can also apply. However, selected candidates must submit their provisional degree certificate within six months of joining.

Application Process, Candidates must first identify an IIT Madras faculty member whose research area matches their proposed work. They are required to discuss their research proposal with the faculty member and obtain consent before submitting their application.

Applications will subsequently be reviewed by the relevant department. Eligible candidates will be invited to present a seminar covering their research proposal and expertise. The Departmental Evaluation Committee will assess factors including the originality of the proposal, research experience and the potential contribution of the candidate’s work to the department.

Candidates who clear the departmental evaluation will proceed to the Institute Selection Committee. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed before recommendations are forwarded to the Director for final approval.

Fellowship Tenure: The fellowship has a minimum tenure of two years. It is initially offered for one year and may be extended for up to two additional years depending on the fellow’s performance.

The programme is intended to provide researchers with an opportunity to develop their academic work within IIT Madras’s research environment. The selection process places emphasis on research quality, academic publications and the relevance of the proposed work.

The fellowship 2026 provides an opportunity for early-career researchers to collaborate with IIT Madras faculty and contribute to research activities across relevant academic disciplines. Candidates meeting the eligibility requirements can proceed with the application after obtaining the required faculty consent.
