52 Indian Universities Enter QS 2027 Rankings, IIT Delhi Leads

  • India records 52 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2027, up sharply from 11 a decade ago. IIT Delhi leads the Indian list at 118 globally, highlighting the country’s growing global higher education presence.

India becomes more visible in the international ranking systems of higher education with 52 Indian institutions making it to the list of QS World University Rankings 2027, which is a great leap from only 11 institutions a decade back. The current ranking system puts India as one of the most prominent higher education systems in the world.

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi ranks first in the country and 118th in the world. The ranking of IIT Delhi shows an improvement from its previous ranking of 123rd to 118th this year. It is important to note that the IIT Delhi has shown the best performance among Indian universities in this ranking.

The next one on the list in terms of rank is IIT Bombay in 134th place and then IIT Madras in 170th place. IIT Kharagpur stands at 205th rank and IIT Kanpur and IISc, Bengaluru, share 221st rank position. This clearly shows that Indian institutes have continued to dominate in international academic standing in the country.

Delhi University occupies the 322nd position globally and is one of the best non-IIT universities in the Indian ranking. Some of the other best Indian universities that have made it to the top-ranking universities include IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, and Shoolini University. It is also worth noting that the inclusion of a private university in the best Indian universities is an indication of the diversity of Indian education.

India has seen a significant increase in its representation as a whole over the last ten years. According to QS, India has 52 institutes that are listed in the global rankings, placing it at the fifth position as the most represented higher education system in the world.

The indicators used by the QS World University Rankings to evaluate universities include those that measure reputation, citation impact, faculty/student ratio, employer reputation, international collaboration, and sustainability. The indicators serve to evaluate the performance of the institutions using metrics other than academic ones.

The recent rankings clearly demonstrate that Indian educational institutions have become more internationally prominent than before. The constant improvement in top IITs and the increased number of Indian institutions joining world rankings demonstrate India’s overall efforts to improve research, innovation, academic quality, and international collaborations. This increased presence of Indian institutions also offers Indian universities an opportunity to increase their international connections and attract more foreign students and researchers.
