- The Government of India commits over ₹650 crore for digital higher education initiatives in 2026-27, expanding online learning infrastructure, virtual laboratories, digital content, and technology-enabled education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The Government of India has earmarked more than ₹650 crore for digital higher education initiatives in the Union Budget 2026-27, reaffirming its commitment to accelerating technology-enabled learning across universities and colleges. The allocation is aimed at strengthening digital infrastructure, expanding online education platforms, improving access to virtual learning resources, and supporting the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The investment will be channelled towards key digital education programmes, including the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT), which focuses on enhancing the quality and accessibility of higher education through technology. The initiative supports the development of digital classrooms, virtual laboratories, e-learning platforms, online courses, and educational content to improve learning outcomes for students across the country.
The funding also seeks to strengthen platforms such as SWAYAM, SWAYAM Prabha, the National Digital Library, and other digital learning ecosystems that provide students with free access to academic resources and online courses. These platforms are expected to play a key role in expanding flexible learning opportunities, particularly for students in remote and underserved regions, while promoting lifelong learning and skill development.
The allocation aligns with the government’s broader Digital India mission, which aims to leverage technology to improve governance, education, healthcare, and public service delivery. By investing in digital infrastructure and educational technologies, the government intends to bridge the digital divide, increase access to quality higher education, and equip students with industry-relevant digital skills required in an increasingly technology-driven economy.
Officials believe the increased investment will support universities and higher educational institutions in adopting advanced digital tools, modernising teaching methodologies, and expanding hybrid learning models. The initiative is also expected to encourage greater use of artificial intelligence, digital content creation, and virtual learning environments within academic institutions. As India continues to advance its digital transformation agenda, the enhanced allocation for digital higher education reflects the government’s focus on building an inclusive, technology-enabled education ecosystem capable of meeting future workforce and innovation requirements.
