- IIT Kharagpur launches the Texas AI Learning Centre in Houston to advance AI education, professional training and industry collaboration. The centre strengthens India-US technology ties and begins with a two-day AI certificate bootcamp.
The IIT Kharagpur Outreach Network has launched the Texas AI Learning Centre at the Tagore Centre in Houston, creating a new platform for artificial intelligence education, professional training, skill development and industry-oriented solutions. The initiative aims to strengthen academic and technology collaboration between India and the United States.
The centre is inaugurated alongside celebrations marking India’s 80th Independence Day and IIT Kharagpur’s 75th anniversary. India’s Consul General in Houston, DC Manjunath, Tagore Centre Foundation co-founder and IIT Kharagpur Foundation President Dr Asoke Deysarkar, and IIT Kharagpur Director Prof Suman Chakraborty jointly launch the facility.
The new centre is designed to provide opportunities for learning and professional development in emerging AI technologies while creating stronger links between academia, industry and the technology community. It is expected to serve students, professionals, researchers and organisations seeking to build capabilities in artificial intelligence.
Speaking at the launch, Consul General Manjunath highlights the expanding technology partnership between India and the US and the opportunities created through greater cooperation in AI. He also expresses hope that the facility will eventually develop into a full-fledged overseas IIT Outreach Centre.
Prof Suman Chakraborty says the centre could evolve into a broader Pan-IIT platform that brings together alumni and global stakeholders. It is also expected to support professional development programmes and help industries address complex challenges through technology and innovation.
The initiative receives support from the wider IIT alumni and technology ecosystem. US Consul General in Kolkata Kathy Giles-Diaz welcomes the academic collaboration, while HCL Technologies co-founder and IIT alumnus Arjun Malhotra pledges support for expanding the centre’s reach.
The centre begins operations with a two-day AI certificate bootcamp coordinated by Dr Debyajoti Banerjee, a professor at Texas A&M University. The programme provides an immediate academic and professional training component to the newly established facility.
The launch also attracts IIT alumni, technology professionals, Indian diaspora representatives and local officials, reflecting interest in building stronger India-US connections around emerging technologies.
With AI increasingly influencing business, research and workforce requirements, the Texas AI Learning Centre aims to create a sustained platform for knowledge exchange, professional development and industry collaboration. The initiative also strengthens IIT Kharagpur’s international outreach and could provide a foundation for broader technology partnerships between Indian and US institutions.
