88-Year-Old Veteran Joins PhD Programme at Amity University

  • Dedicated military leader Lt Gen DV Kalra is pursuing Doctorate in Defence Studies

Veteran Lt Gen DV Kalra, PVSM, AVSM (Retd), has embarked on a PhD Research Programme at the age of 88. He has joined the Amity Institute of Defence & Strategic Studies at Amity University Uttar Pradesh, furthering his academic pursuits.

Lt Gen Kalra’s military career has been marked by outstanding achievements and exemplary leadership. Throughout his service, he exhibited organisational skills, innovation-driven professionalism and unwavering dedication. His contributions have been characterised by groundbreaking ideologies and consistent efforts to advance organisational interests. Lt Gen Kalra harbored a passionate desire to pursue a doctorate in philosophy during his military career. Learning about the Amity Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, which boasts the largest number of military officers and students from diverse backgrounds pursuing PhDs, he made the enlightened decision to enroll in the programme at the age of 88. This makes him the oldest veteran to undertake a Doctoral Programme in Defence Studies.

Under the mentorship and supervision of Lt Gen Dr SK Gadeock, AVSM (Retd), Director General, Amity Institute of Defence & Strategic Studies and Amity Centre for Defence & Strategic Analysis (ACDSA), Amity University, Lt Gen Kalra is now researching ‘Critical Supply Chain in Conflict Zones: A Case Study of Ukraine Russia War’ in its contemporary context. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity and the guidance provided by Dr Ashok K Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Education Group.

“I am extremely delighted and honoured to pursue a PhD Research Programme from a prestigious institution like Amity. The urge in me to study further has not diminished even at this age, and I’m extremely grateful to Amity University for giving me this wonderful opportunity and supporting me in my endeavours so that, through my research work, I am able to address the high level of policymakers to sensitise the people about supply chain logistics,” stated Lt Gen DV Kalra.

Lt Gen Kalra has authored numerous professional papers and co-authored the book ‘Supply Chain Management Strategy, Planning and Operation’ with two American authors.He was honoured with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal by the President of India in 1988 and 1992, respectively. Post-retirement, he served as a visiting faculty in Supply Chain Management for various management programmes in several institutions.
