The University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on arctic, polar studies on the SWAYAM portal. These courses are Understanding the Arctic: Climate and Environmental Protection, and Polar Science, Arctic Governance, Policy, and Law.
These courses are available for registration on the SWAYAM Platform for the July 2024 semester at the official website — swayam.gov.in. The MOOCs will start from July 18, 2024.
As per the official notice by UGC, the Commission has launched a course in Polar Science, Arctic Governance, Policy and Law. This is an election 15 weeks long course. The course will begin on July 18 and continue till October 31. The enrollment process will conclude on August 31. Exam for the course will be conducted on December 15.
Similarly, the ‘Understanding the Arctic – Climate and the Need for Environmental Protection’ course will also be a 15 weeks long elective course, which will begin on July 18 and conclude on October 31. The enrollment will conclude on August 31 and the exam date is July December 14.
The UGC Subject Matter Expert Committee has selected courses matching with the six pillars of the Arctic Policy of India, UGC said in an official release.
“Changing weather patterns have global consequences, affecting everything from monsoon cycles to rising sea levels. Considering the critical role of the Arctic in global conversations and our country, courses on arctic are a value addition for our youth. These courses are credit-eligible, and universities have the flexibility to integrate them according to their preferred design of curriculum,” said UGC Chief, M Jagadesh Kumar.
