The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee opens applications for admission to its PhD programmes for the Spring Semester 2026-27. Eligible candidates can submit their applications online until October 20, 2026, while academic activities for the new semester are scheduled to begin on January 11, 2027.
The doctoral programmes are offered across multiple departments, centres and schools covering areas such as Architecture and Planning, Biosciences and Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science and Engineering, Design, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Earth Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Hydrology, Hydro and Renewable Energy, Physics, Mathematics and several other disciplines.
Under the Common Minimum Eligibility Criteria, candidates holding a master’s degree in the relevant discipline are generally required to have a minimum CGPA of 6.0 on a 10-point scale or 60% marks for the General, GEN-EWS and OBC categories. For SC, ST and PwD candidates, the minimum requirement is a CGPA of 5.50 or 55% marks. Department-specific eligibility requirements also apply.
Candidates are generally required to qualify in a recognised national-level examination such as GATE, CEED, JEST, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET, or hold a national-level fellowship. However, exemptions are available for certain candidates. Applicants with a BTech or MSc degree and a CGPA of 8.0 or above from Ministry of Education-funded technical institutions can be exempted from the national-level test requirement.
Candidates holding a four-year bachelor’s degree with at least 7.50 CGPA or 75% marks, along with a qualifying national-level examination or fellowship, are also eligible. Graduates of IITs with a CGPA of 8.0 or above are similarly exempt from the national-level test requirement.
The online application process begins on September 21, 2026, and closes on October 20. Written tests and/or interviews are tentatively scheduled between November 16 and 21, 2026. Academic registration is scheduled for January 7 and 8, 2027, followed by the commencement of classes on January 11.
IIT Roorkee also offers the Sakuntala Fellowship for eligible female candidates holding BTech, BE, BArch or BDes degrees from Ministry of Education-funded technical institutions. Candidates with a CGPA of 8.5 or above on a 10-point scale can receive an exemption from GATE, CEED or other national-level examination requirements under the scheme.
The institute also provides opportunities under its Joint Doctoral Degree Programme with partner universities in countries including Canada, France, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan and the UK.
