IIT Kanpur Sets Up Statistics, Data Science Department

  • IIT Kanpur establishes a dedicated Department of Statistics and Data Science, expanding academic and research opportunities through specialized BS, MS, MSc, and PhD Programmes focused on AI, machine learning, and data-driven innovation.

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has announced the establishment of a dedicated Department of Statistics and Data Science, marking a significant step in strengthening its academic and research ecosystem in one of the fastest-growing technology domains. The new department is designed to address the increasing demand for expertise in data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and computational sciences across industries and research institutions.

The department will offer a comprehensive range of academic programmes, including Bachelor of Science (BS), Bachelor of Science-Master of Science (BS-MS), Master of Science (MSc), Master of Science (MS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. These programmes aim to equip students with a strong foundation in statistical theory, mathematical modeling, computational techniques, and modern data science applications.

According to the institute, the curriculum has been designed to blend core concepts in statistics and mathematics with emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data engineering, predictive analytics, and big data technologies. Students will also have opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary electives from departments such as Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering, enabling them to develop expertise across multiple domains.

The initiative reflects IIT Kanpur’s commitment to fostering innovation and preparing graduates for the evolving digital economy. With organizations increasingly relying on data-driven decision-making, the demand for professionals skilled in analytics, AI, and machine learning continues to rise across sectors including finance, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and technology.

Beyond academics, the department is expected to serve as a hub for advanced research in statistical sciences, machine learning algorithms, artificial intelligence applications, and computational methodologies. Faculty and students will engage in research projects addressing real-world challenges while collaborating with industry, government agencies, and academic institutions.

The creation of the Department of Statistics and Data Science aligns with broader trends in higher education, where institutions are increasingly investing in specialized programmes focused on AI and data-driven technologies. By establishing a dedicated academic unit, IIT Kanpur aims to strengthen its leadership in emerging technologies while producing highly skilled professionals capable of driving innovation in the data-centric era.
