- IIT Madras has made DigiLocker verification mandatory for all Indian candidates registering for GATE 2027. The new requirement aims to streamline identity verification, reduce application errors, and strengthen the security of the registration process. GATE 2027 applications will open on 14 August 2026.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, has announced that DigiLocker verification will be mandatory for all Indian candidates registering for the examination. The move is aimed at simplifying the application process, strengthening identity verification, and improving the overall security and authenticity of candidate records. GATE 2027 registrations will begin on 14 August 2026 through the official GOAPS portal.
Under the revised registration process, applicants must possess a verified DigiLocker account linked to their Aadhaar number. During registration, DigiLocker will automatically verify key personal details, including the candidate’s name, date of birth, Aadhaar information, photograph, mobile number, email address, and residential address. The verification process is expected to reduce manual data entry, minimise documentation errors, and speed up application processing.
IIT Madras has advised candidates to ensure that their Aadhaar-linked mobile number is active before the registration window opens, as OTP-based authentication will be required for DigiLocker verification. Students who do not already have a DigiLocker account are encouraged to create and verify one in advance to avoid last-minute issues during the application process.
The institute clarified that the mandatory DigiLocker requirement applies only to Indian candidates. International applicants and candidates who are not eligible to use DigiLocker will be provided with an alternative verification mechanism during registration. The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s broader push to promote secure digital documentation and paperless verification across public services and educational institutions.
Apart from the DigiLocker integration, GATE 2027 introduces several updates, including a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper and revised syllabus changes for select disciplines. The examination will be conducted on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21 February 2027, while applications without a late fee will be accepted until 21 September 2026.
The introduction of mandatory DigiLocker verification marks a significant step towards a more secure and efficient examination process. By integrating digital identity verification with the application system, IIT Madras aims to enhance transparency, improve candidate convenience, and ensure the authenticity of records for one of India’s most important postgraduate entrance examinations.
