The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has announced a series of reforms for the NEET UG 2026 counselling process ahead of the commencement of undergraduate medical admissions. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated that counselling will begin shortly, with the updated guidelines designed to simplify admissions, improve transparency, and reduce the need for physical visits by candidates.
One of the key changes is the introduction of an online seat upgradation process. Candidates who are allotted a seat in an earlier counselling round and wish to participate in subsequent rounds for a better option will no longer be required to report physically to the allotted college before seeking an upgrade. The entire process can now be completed through the MCC portal, making admissions more convenient and time-efficient.
The MCC has also introduced an online resignation facility, allowing candidates to surrender their allotted seats digitally through the counselling portal instead of visiting institutions in person. This measure is expected to streamline the withdrawal process, reduce paperwork, and help ensure that vacant seats are made available more quickly in subsequent counselling rounds.
Another major reform relates to NRI quota admissions. Eligible candidates applying under the NRI category can now upload and verify the required documents online, eliminating the need for physical submission. The move is intended to simplify verification and accelerate the admission process for overseas applicants and institutions.
To support the implementation of these changes, the MCC has conducted training sessions for state counselling authorities and participating medical colleges. Institutions have also been directed to provide accurate information regarding seat availability, fee structures, and admission procedures to ensure greater transparency throughout the counselling process.
The revised guidelines form part of the government’s efforts to modernise the NEET counselling system through greater digitalisation and administrative efficiency. Candidates are advised to regularly monitor the official MCC portal for the counselling schedule, registration dates, and other important updates as the admission process for MBBS, BDS, and other undergraduate medical courses is expected to commence soon.
