- Illinois Institute of Technology has received UGC approval to launch its Mumbai campus from September 2026, becoming the first US University to offer American degree programmes through an independent campus in India.
The Illinois Institute of Technology, also known as Illinois Tech, has got the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) Letter of Approval, to kick off its Mumbai campus, becoming the first United States University to run an independent degree giving campus in India. This green signal lets the university start its academic work and then accept its inaugural batch, from September 2026, which is honestly a big milestone, for the internationalisation of India’s higher education sector.
The Mumbai campus will offer undergraduate and graduate programmes in high-demand disciplines, like Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, and Business, in general. The curriculum is set up to echo the academic standards of Illinois Tech’s Chicago campus, but with a more hands-on vibe, mixing rigorous coursework with project-driven study, cross-disciplinary education, and solid industry connection. Those way students are readied for worldwide careers, not just local ones.
As per the university, the students enrolled in the Mumbai campus would be awarded internationally recognized degrees without having to study abroad. The university will ensure that the students gain an international perspective on learning by incorporating technology-based classrooms, research based education, practical learning and working in partnership with industry associations. This would enable the students to gain a global perspective without any hassle of studying abroad.
According to the university administration, this project is in line with the development of India as an international center of technological innovation. Through the establishment of its own campus in Mumbai, Illinois Tech hopes to meet the increased demand for internationally acclaimed education from Indian students. This project will help in the realization of the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which calls for the establishment of campuses by top-notch universities in India.
Learning at the Mumbai campus would involve an interdisciplinary approach, entrepreneurism, research, and innovation along with collaborations between academia and industry. It is expected that students shall take advantage of the internship programs, industrial projects, mentoring by faculty members, and interactions with multinational firms in India’s booming tech environment.
President of Illinois Institute of Technology Raj Echambadi talked about the opening of the institute’s campus in Mumbai as being a landmark move towards ensuring greater access to technology-based education for future generations of leaders who will be able to solve global problems. The university authorities have emphasized the increasing role of India in the global economy of knowledge.
This marks an important breakthrough in the Indian higher education scenario, paving the way for greater opportunities in academic collaboration between Indian institutions and universities worldwide as well as for international degree programs in India. With more universities from abroad setting up camp in India, the inauguration of Illinois Tech Mumbai is set to benefit students greatly by offering them quality education right here at home.
