- The initiative focuses on dataset creation, digitisation and language models for the minority language ecosystem
A workshop focused on preserving the Gurmukhi language through Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and digital model development was held at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur (SGTB) Khalsa College, University of Delhi, on Friday. The Bhashini Sanchalan/Seva Workshop was organised by the Digital India Bhashini Division under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in collaboration with SGTB Khalsa College.
The workshop centred on the Gurmukhi script, which is integral to the Punjabi language and literature and holds cultural, historical and religious significance, particularly in Sikh traditions and scriptures. The programme included sessions on developing AI models for Gurmukhi through targeted data collection, validation systems and community-led participation.
Discussions covered the creation of text corpora, audio recordings and digitisation of manuscripts, supported by data quality frameworks. Participants were also briefed on the BhashaDaan platform, which enables structured language data contribution and community validation by proficient speakers.
Shailendra Pal Singh, Senior General Manager, Digital India Bhashini Division, highlighted the importance of using AI to improve inclusive access to knowledge systems and digital services through Indian languages.
The Bhashini team conducted live demonstrations of language AI technologies across text, speech and document domains. These included text-to-text translation, speech recognition, optical character recognition and multilingual tools, along with use cases in governance, education and digital public infrastructure.
Gurmohinder Singh, Principal, SGTB Khalsa College, said the initiative would help bridge the digital divide in Indian languages and added that the college plans long-term collaboration for Gurmukhi applications.
