- MP writes to Education Minister, raises concerns over student safety and mental health support systems
Rajya Sabha leader John Brittas has written to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan seeking urgent intervention over what he described as an “alarming series” of student suicides at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra. In his letter sent on Sunday, the CPI(M) MP said four students had died at the institute between February and April this year, while another student had reportedly attempted suicide.
Brittas said the incidents raise serious concerns regarding student safety, institutional response mechanisms and the adequacy of mental health support systems on campus. “The alarming series of student suicides and attempts within a short span at NIT Kurukshetra raises serious questions about student safety, institutional response, and the adequacy of mental health support systems,” he said in the letter.
The MP urged the Union Education Minister to intervene in the matter and address the emerging concerns at the centrally funded technical institution.
