TCG Centres for Research and Education in Science and Technology (TCG CREST, a Deemed to be University, today announced recruitment of 40 new research scholars under its PhD program.
This is the first cohort after it received the ‘Deemed to be University’ (DTBU) status from the Ministry of Education and UGC, Government of India in May 2025. The new research scholars are distributed across its two schools, namely School of Natural Sciences and School of Mathematics & Computer Sciences.
“Recruitment of a new PhD cohort is an important milestone for us as it comes closely on the heel of receiving Deemed to be University status from the Government of India. We focus on research proposals that have a strong interdisciplinary focus and are cutting-edge, that reflect the frontiers and evolving directions of knowledge production. Proposals accepted in this round showcase the same. This is a reaffirmation of our commitment to foster excellence in research, and nurture the next generation of scholars and innovators,” said Malabika Sarkar, Mentor, TCG CREST.
In this round of applications, the proposals accepted span wide-ranging areas. These include cryptology and post-quantum cryptology, artificial intelligence and machine learning, quantum computing, quantum information & communication, quantum sensing, sustainable energy solutions, translational research in mathematics, neuroscience, and cancer research.
With induction of the new cohort, it now has a total of 135 PhD scholars. While the previous batches were affiliated with collaborating institutions like IITs and NITs, with the ‘Deemed to be University’ status now, all incoming batches will be fully under the aegis of TCG CREST.
TCG CREST (DTBU) offers competitive fellowships like JRF and SRF, along with an annual contingency grant, access to state-of-art facilities and research infrastructure, opportunities for international collaboration and participation in global conferences.
The next call for PhD applications is expected to be announced in December 2025. It will also commence its curated masters program from August 2026.
Established in 2020 by The Chatterjee Group (TCG), CREST was conceived as a dynamic force in the global science and technology innovation ecosystem. The institution has made rapid strides in advancing translational research and fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration to address some of the world’s most pressing societal challenges.
