The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Google Cloud India are coming together to establish a prestigious academic position dedicated to advancing research in the realm of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). This distinguished position will be known as the ‘Google Cloud Chair.’
In academia, the title ‘Chair’ is reserved for endowed professorships, signifying one of the highest accolades in the academic world. The endowed Google Cloud Chair Professorship will play a pivotal role in bolstering and augmenting research endeavors within the academic sphere, fostering stronger collaborations in the research domain, as per IIT-Bombay.
The incumbent in this role will bear the responsibility of launching new academic courses, strengthening existing ones, actively engaging in collaborative initiatives with Google Cloud and offering scholarly and technical guidance in their specific area of expertise. The criteria for evaluating the impact of the Chair Professorship will be jointly determined by IIT Bombay and Google Cloud.
Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri, the Director of IIT Bombay, underscored the significance of such Chairs, emphasising their crucial role in IIT Bombay’s mission to attract the most talented and brilliant students, researchers, and professors, with the ultimate goal of nurturing future leaders and innovators.
Anil Bhansali, the VP of Engineering and Head of India Development Center at Google Cloud, articulated their shared vision: “Our objective is to provide both academic and technical leadership in the field of Generative AI, and to initiate and offer expert guidance in Research and Development programs, whether supported by government agencies or the industry.”
