The 11th convocation of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram (IISER TVM) was conducted at its campus in Vithura, Thiruvananthapuram on 23rd July 2023.
Padma Bhushan Dr. Koppillil Radhakrishnan, Former Chairperson, ISRO and Chairperson of the standing committee of the IIT Council was the Chief Guest of the function, which was presided over by Prof. Arvind Anant Natu, Chairperson, Board of Governors of IISER TVM.
After a modern and immersive research-integrated education, a total of 189 BS-MS, 73 MSc, 21 MS (Research), 36 PhD and 12 integrated PhD students were awarded the degrees in the 11th Convocation. Prof. J. N. Moorthy, Director, IISER TVM presented the report on the developments and progress of the Institute.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Radhakrishnan and the Chairperson of the Board, Prof. Natu jointly gave away the Institute gold medal, Director’s gold medal for academic excellence, the school gold and silver medals, best undergraduate researcher medals, the Institute cultural award, and certificates of distinction to the meritorious students. Sharang Rajesh Iyer received the Institute Gold Medal, while Ananthu M. received the Director’s Gold Medal for Academic Excellence.
In his report, Prof. J. N. Moorthy, Director highlighted the Institute’s efforts to impart high-quality holistic education integrated with research to the students. The Institute has swiftly begun to implement the New Education Policy, NEP 2020 and has formalised multiple exit options in its flagship BS-MS programs starting from the forthcoming academic year, he said. Prof. Moorthy mentioned that the academic achievements of the Institute have attracted several national and international recognitions to the Institute. In particular, IISER TVM ranks 14th in the country in the recently announced Nature Index Rankings.
The Chief Guest, Dr. K. Radhakrishnan delivered the convocation address. He stressed upon the idea of IISER as a game-changer for Indian science and urged the graduates to be the ambassadors for their alma mater. The Chief Guest advised the graduates to contribute to addressing the key scientific, technical, social and environmental issues that our world is facing today. He highlighted the role of ‘Choice’ as the most powerful tool that enables one to go from where one is today to where one wants to be tomorrow. Each one of us should live up to leave a legacy and make a difference for the society around us, he said.
