- A new global survey reveals that 81% of Indian students pursuing overseas education intend to return to India after graduation, reflecting stronger confidence in domestic career opportunities and long-term professional growth.
Most Indian Students seeking higher education abroad have shifted from regarding international education as an avenue for migration to one that offers them a chance of being exposed to the outside world, according to the Student Global Mobility Index 3rd edition published by Oxford International. In this study, it was found that 81 percent of Indian students intend to come back home after studying abroad due to career prospects at home.
The survey collects responses from 17,925 respondents, with another 2,400 individuals offering their thoughts on courses, family backgrounds, sources of information, and future plans. There appears to be a noticeable change in the aspirations of the students, with the implication being that studying abroad is viewed as the way to gain international experience before entering the Indian job market.
Another important trend found from the report is the increasing level of independence of students in deciding to go abroad for studies. 49 percent of the participants said that education abroad is mainly their choice, whereas the figure was 29 percent in 2023–24, suggesting an increase in the level of independent planning by the students. The role of families in choosing the destination and courses is diminishing, as the students are becoming better informed about their choices.
The survey results also show that almost nine out of ten individuals taking part in the survey are first generation students seeking an education abroad in their respective families, which speaks of how accessible international education has become. Business and management have continued to top the list of the subjects in demand, whereas more students use Google searches, websites of universities, and educational consultants in order to assess institutions.
From the results, it can be concluded that changes in the world economy, immigration laws, and employment opportunities in India are affecting the future plans of the students. Instead of staying abroad permanently, many of the aspirants are now trying to balance their foreign education with their careers in India’s expanding industries.
Experts in the education field feel that the trend is reflective of the fact that the innovation environment in India is becoming stronger, as the scope of startup environments and the demand for professionals with a global outlook is rising. With students coming back with their international experience, it is expected that they would be contributing to research, entrepreneurial activities, business management, and technology advancements in the nation.
