Scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have created an optical sensor that uses light as a means to detect many kinds of toxicants within water or biological samples. This new technology has been created to enhance water monitoring and testing through a cheap, effective, and fast method of detecting toxicants such as heavy metals, dangerous bacteria, fluoride, and other toxins, especially in less-privileged places.
The invention has been named “E-Eye” and utilizes state-of-the-art optical sensing technology that allows it to perform an analysis of the samples in a very short span of time and identify several contaminants. This process does not require any complex laboratory equipment. In fact, its portability makes it ideal for use at sites where immediate water quality testing is needed. Scientists believe that the technology will play a major role in environmental surveillance.
