The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have expanded its course of study from the field of engineering and technology through introducing courses in foreign languages to help students become bilingual as well as globally experienced. Some examples of IIT institutes offering language courses are IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Hyderabad among others.
The subjects include widely spoken international languages like French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Sanskrit, depending on the particular institute. Such programmes have been created in order to develop communication abilities, to encourage cross cultural understanding, and to prepare the students for working in multinational companies, international scientific collaboration, and studying abroad. With the inclusion of language studies into their academic environment, the IITs address the increasing need for globally competent graduates.
Many IITs offer such courses through specific language centers and humanities departments by providing various certification and diploma courses as well as electives.
