The IITB-Monash Research Academy recently hosted its graduation ceremony, conferring 20 PhD degrees to Indian scholars. The event was attended by Dr Megan Clark AC, Chancellor of Monash University, Professor Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, along with senior representatives from both institutions, government officials, industry leaders, and the families of graduates.
Mr. M.S. Unnikrishnan, Chief Executive Officer of the Academy, said the achievements reflect the significance of the partnership and the calibre of scholars emerging from the program. “Since its inception, the Academy has graduated 265 students, with alumni contributing to global challenges and founding 12 start-ups in areas ranging from energy storage to advanced healthcare solutions,” he noted.
Professor Kedare highlighted the collaborative nature of the Academy, saying it provides a dynamic research environment that encourages innovation and real-world impact. “Our joint PhD graduates are solving problems through interdisciplinary research and are emerging as leaders with a global outlook,” he said.
Professor Craig Jeffrey, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) and Senior Vice-President at Monash University, who also attended the ceremony, said graduates of the Academy are highly sought after by leading global companies and academic institutions.
This year’s graduates showcased a wide range of impactful research topics, including the study of lagrangian transport in alveolar flows, the development of metal-organic nano-materials for chemiresistive and gas sensors for toxic chemical detection, and representative democracy in India.
“These projects underscore the Academy’s commitment to addressing real-world challenges across diverse sectors,” Professor Jeffrey said.
