Since its start, the Digital Bus program has grown steadily, expanding by two more buses to now reach across 13 states, touching the lives of more than 4.58 lakh people. The initiative is opening doors to digital learning for rural and semi-urban communities that are often left behind in the digital revolution.
This is more than just “education on wheels”. Each one is fitted with 16 or 20 computers, indoor and outdoor digital screens, solar panels for clean energy, and 5G-enabled internet through mobile hotspots. From the basics of using a computer and managing money online to learning cybersecurity skills or preparing for IT/ITES careers, the buses create a safe and accessible space for learners of all ages.
The response from communities has been heartening. By reaching village centres directly and engaging families through door-to-door outreach, the initiative has witnessed remarkable participation from women learners — many of whom face social and mobility barriers. Certificate distribution ceremonies marked the launches to celebrate the achievements of new learners, with local leaders and partners joining in to affirm the shared belief that digital empowerment is a collective responsibility.
Reflecting on the milestone, Ms. Charu Kapoor, Country Director, NIIT Foundation, said: “The Digital Bus is built on a simple idea. Learning opportunities should reach people where they are, not the other way around. When we bring technology directly to villages, we don’t just improve digital literacy, we open up new possibilities for women, youth, and entire communities. The smiles and confidence we see on the faces of first-time learners are proof that these buses are vehicles of hope as much as they are of education.”
As NIIT Foundation looks ahead, the expansion to Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu is not just an addition of two more buses but a reaffirmation of its vision: to ensure that no community is left behind in India’s digital journey, among many other states like Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and many more. By combining innovation with empathy and technology with sustainability, the Digital Bus program is proving that meaningful change often begins with taking learning to the very doorsteps of those who need it most.
