Army contributes to Nation Building in Multiple ways, says Corps Commander Gen Pushkar at IIM Rohtak

The Indian Institute of Management Rohtak had the privilege of hosting Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar, AVSM, VSM, for a compelling session on “The Role of Armed Forces in Nation Building: Operation Sindoor.” Attended by over 320 students and distinguished faculty members, the lecture provided an in-depth perspective on the multifaceted contributions of the Indian armed forces, extending far beyond their traditional roles on the battlefield. The event highlighted the military’s enduring commitment to safeguarding India’s sovereignty, promoting unity, and fostering resilience in the face of contemporary challenges.

The proceedings began with a welcome address by Prof. Dheeraj Sharma, Director, IIM Rohtak, who articulated the indispensable role of the armed forces in protecting India’s democratic values and freedom. Professor Sharma emphasized that India’s military is distinguished not merely by its strength, but by its steadfast adherence to a freedom-centric value system that underpins national security in both peace and conflict. Citing the Kargil War, he encouraged the audience to seek wisdom from those with direct experience and to remain vigilant in an era shaped by complex narratives and information overload.

Lt Gen Rajesh Pushkar urged students to dream boldly while staying anchored in purpose and integrity. Quoting Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s words, “Dreams are not those that you see while you sleep; dreams are those that don’t let you sleep,” he reminded them that true ambition demands relentless effort and integrity, and that above all, they must strive towards the greater good of society. Drawing inspiration from The Alchemist, he encouraged students to pursue their unique ‘pot of gold’ with optimism and a strong commitment to the country.

He spoke in depth about how the armed forces contribute far beyond the battlefield by working to build the nation in visible and invisible ways. He highlighted their role in boosting defence exports, generating employment, supporting start-ups through dedicated corridors, and uplifting border communities through the Vibrant Villages Programme and Gati Shakti Masterplan. He illuminated the Army’s progressive efforts in education, skill development, and women’s empowerment, from the enduring legacy of the National Defence Academy since 1951 to the remarkable achievements of women commanders today. He reaffirmed that during moments of crisis, the armed forces stand firm as the nation’s ultimate pillar of strength and stability. Sharing evidence-based insights on Operation Sindoor as a decisive actions taken to target terrorist camps and military infrastructure supporting various terrorist organisations, Lt. Gen. Pushkar clarified that the operation was not solely about military action but also about countering misinformation and safeguarding national stability against external propaganda. He urged students to remain vigilant against such narratives and to embody a spirit of unity and service that strengthens the nation, both in times of peace and moments of conflict.

The session concluded with a formal vote of thanks and the National Anthem. The event reinforced Prof. Sharma’s message on the necessity of critical inquiry and the perils of misinformation in today’s society. He reminded students that in an age where conspiracy theories thrive and information is often taken at face value, they must question sources and seek alternative perspectives. Citing insights from the session, he urged the young generation to learn from the armed forces’ example of vigilance and integrity, a reminder that nation-building is a benign effort that demands clarity of thought, resilience, and the courage to defend the truth.
