IIT Lesser Known Courses: IIT BHU’s course on Pharmaceutical Engineering & Technology

  • The courses offered by IIT BHU are designed to impart knowledge on various aspects of drug design, development, testing, and safe and effective use of drugs/medicines including drug delivery systems.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology (formerly the Department of Pharmaceutics) at IIT BHU, Varanasi, offers a variety of programs, including a four-year BTech, a five-year Integrated Dual Degree MTech, a two-year MPharm, and PhD courses. These courses are designed to impart knowledge on various aspects of drug design, development, testing, and safe and effective use of drugs/medicines including drug delivery systems.

The courses “provide a unique fusion of biology with engineering and technological concepts to develop skilful processes/ techniques for designing, procuring and evaluating various drugs and drug delivery systems,” the institute claims.

Courses offered by IIT BHU

  1. BTech programme of the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology: It offers a four-year BTech programme in Pharmacy, which started in 2013. The BTech programme offered at IIT BHU has a unique blend of courses comprising science, engineering, pharmacy humanities disciplines etc. In the first two years, the student will study the basic science and engineering courses along with preliminary foundation courses of pharmacy core and carry out an exciting exploratory project during the fourth semester.

In the later two years, students will be exposed to the advanced pharmacy core and stream courses, besides the open elective courses from allied or other engineering disciplines and a rigorous project during the sixth and seventh semesters.

Admissions are made through the JEE conducted jointly by the IITs.

  1. Integrated Dual Degree (BTech and MTech) Programme: The department offers a five-year Integrated Dual Degree (BTech and MTech) in Pharmacy. The courses are designed to impart knowledge on various aspects of Pharmaceutical sciences and engineering including drug design, drug development, testing, and safe and effective use of drugs/medicines and drug delivery systems.

Besides the prerequisite courses of four-year BTech programme, the five-year research-oriented IDD curriculum includes a bunch of advanced courses in various streams viz, Formulation design & development, Drug design & development, Drug evaluation & toxicology, Natural drug product development and thus provides an opportunity to carry out research projects and thesis work. For this too, admissions are made through the JEE exam conducted jointly by the IITs.

  1. MPharm Programme: The Department offers a two-year M Pharm programme in four specialisation areas: Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy.

Admissions are accepted based on the GATE score.

  1. PhD Programme: PhD programme is offered in four research specialisations viz., Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy.

GATE/NEET score/ sponsorship by the employer followed by the interview.
