IIT lesser known Courses: IIT-Roorkee Course on Polymer Science and Engineering

  • IIT lesser known Courses: IIT-Roorkee Course on Polymer Science and Engineering

A student on completion of this course would be a professional in understanding the properties of the polymer on a macro and molecular level.

The Department of Polymer and Process Engineering (DPPE) is one of the unique departments of the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR), located in the Saharanpur campus of IIT Roorkee. The department performs fundamental and applied research in polymer science, polymer engineering, process engineering, and chemical engineering.

The IIT Roorkee department offers a four-year Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programme (comprising eight semesters) in Polymer Science and Engineering. This programme covers basic but essential concepts of Mathematics, IT, Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering. Chemical engineering concepts such as Thermodynamics, Mass Transfer, Energy Balance, and other such concepts are also taught that act as tools to help in the proper understanding of technicalities of polymer processing.

A student on completion of this course would be a professional in understanding the properties of the polymer on a macro and molecular level, thus having the required skills to determine the application of polymer and also having enough knowledge of machinery and polymer processing to correctly devise and test the application showing a huge impact on this polymer driven era.

IIT Roorkee Programmes
PhD in Polymer Science and Engineering
The Department at IIT Roorkee offers a rigorous Polymer Science and Engineering PhD programme, combining advanced coursework with research experience. It offers the students next-generation research in a broad spectrum of multi-disciplinary technological areas.

The programme is designed to produce world-class graduates who can apply fundamental knowledge of Polymer and Process engineering to solve academic and industrial problems related to polymers and material science in general.

PhD students undergo advanced coursework focusing on relevant research topics and perform research under the supervision of faculty members possessing enriching international exposure in the field. This programme concludes with defending a scientific thesis before a panel of scientific experts.

MTech in Polymer Science and Engineering
MTech in Polymer Science and Engineering is a two-year, full-time postgraduate course offered by the Department of Polymer and Process Engineering. The programme is designed to produce world-class graduates who can apply fundamental knowledge of polymer and process engineering to solve academic and industrial problems related to polymers. The teaching and project are designed considering the needs of the industry. The current intake is of 22 students. The MTech programme imparts fundamental and applied knowledge to the students and trains them to be professionally ready and well-trained.

Integrated Dual Degree
Students of BTech programmes at the end of the third year can opt to switch over to any of those MTech programmes whose eligibility criteria are satisfied by their BTech branch. The conversion would require a minimum CGPA of 7.5 at the end of third year and the consent of the DAPCs of the concerned Departments. On successful completion of the programme, students will get corresponding BTech and MTech degrees under the Integrated Dual Degree programmes.
