  • IIT Madras & Deakin University collaborate to foster future leaders from SAARC and ASEAN countries to spearhead cutting-edge global research 

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Deakin University, Australia, announce the launch of ‘The IIT Madras Deakin University Research Academy.’ Through collaborative global research projects, joint supervision and meritorious scholarships, the Academy will nurture several highly talented graduate research scholars, representing SAARC and ASEAN countries.

“Knowledge, education and research partnerships are a crucial pillar of the Australia-India relationship. We are proud that Australia has more collaborations with IIT Madras than with any other country. Deakin and IIT Madras have a longstanding partnership and we congratulate them on this significant next step which will generate further cutting-edge research in topics of crucial global importance, including clean energy solutions”, Sarah Kirlew, Australian Consul General, Chennai, said.

The research scholars will pioneer solutions through cutting-edge research in areas of strategic importance to Australia and India encompassing clean energy, critical technologies, sustainability, climate change, healthcare technologies and more, contributing to the socio-economic goals of both nations at a global level.

“IIT Madras plans to create a sustainable future by integrating innovation, collaboration and responsible practices. It will partner with Deakin to enhance its technical and research expertise, environmental stewardship and social responsibility action plan. The academy aims to become a global leader in sustainability teaching and research”, V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said.

“The IITM Deakin University Research Academy aims to strengthen synergy between institutions by collaborating on strategic research in smart and sustainable technologies. The academy will leverage Deakin’s strengths in working with industry for optimal research and development”, Iain Martin, Vice-Chancellor, Deakin University, said.

Deakin University and IIT Madras are partnering to establish a research academy, offering a four-year joint PhD programme with high-value scholarships, faculty supervision and access to world-class research facilities. The academy also offers opportunities for collaboration with top industry partners in India and Australia, fostering an open innovation ecosystem.

The research academy aims to foster future talent and innovative research through industry collaboration, potentially influencing policy and decision-making at bilateral and multilateral levels. 

The joint PhD programme will offer 30 scholarships in 2024 to scholars from IIT Madras and Deakin University, aiming to provide exceptional international doctoral training opportunities for early-stage researchers. The programme also includes provisions for post-doctoral fellows and academics collaborating at each other’s institutes.

Deakin University and IIT Madras partnerships have grown from faculty exchanges to research academies, demonstrating the power of international collaboration in shaping a better-shared future for communities worldwide. This collaboration represents a significant step towards global research excellence.
