IIT Introduces MBBS, other curricula to meet NEP Criteria

In the light of National Education Policy 2020, IIT-Kharagpur has taken some major strategic initiatives like starting the MBBS programme in medicine at B C Roy Institute of Medical Science and Technology, introduction of a new class of programmes called five-year Interdisciplinary Dual Degree Programmes, in which a student can do a BTech and an MTech programme, four-year bachelor’s programme in science and establishment of an academic bank of credit.

The UG and PG curricula will provide students a broadened choice to select subjects from all over the institute. To study Indian languages, art and culture and pursue research in the fields and its integration with engineering, science, humanity and social sciences research, the institute has also set up a Centre of Indian Knowledge System.

Director V K Tewari said, “NE’s inclusion in academic curriculum will generate more employment based on entrepreneurship model of being an employer than an employee. With multiple entry-exit policy, any student can take a break from their respective courses to gain industry experience and return to continue his academic curriculum.”

UG programmes had eight weeks’ summer internship, which has been extended to eight months of industry internship. Internship has also been proposed in PG programme.
