110% Surge In MBBS Seats, 355 Government Colleges Established In 2022-23: Health Ministry

The Health Ministry has revealed that the number of MBBS seats in government medical colleges has risen from 253 in 2018-19 to 355 in 2022-23.

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, informed the Parliament on Friday that there has been an impressive 110 per cent increase in MBBS seats, from 51,348 before 2014 to 107,948 presently. He also highlighted a substantial rise of 117 per cent in PG seats, from 31,185 before 2014 to 67,802.

These statistics were presented in response to a question raised by M Badruddin Ajmal, a Lok Sabha member representing Dhubri, Assam.

“The Government has expanded the number of medical colleges and subsequently increased MBBS seats. We have observed an 82 per cent increase in medical colleges, from 387 before 2014 to 704 at present. Furthermore, there has been a remarkable 110 per cent rise in MBBS seats, from 51,348 before 2014 to 107,948 at present, along with a 117 per cent increase in PG seats, from 31,185 before 2014 to 67,802 currently,” stated Dr. Mandaviya.

Additionally, Bharati Pravin Pawar, the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, also notified that there are 56,283 MBBS seats available in government medical colleges and 51,665 MBBS seats in private medical colleges for the year 2023-24. This includes 1,615 government and 1,050 private MBBS seats in Bihar.

The count of government medical colleges has progressively increased from 253 in 2018-19 to 355 in 2022-23. The numbers have been consistently rising since 2018, with 279 in 2019-20, 289 in 2020-21, and 322 in 2021-22.

Likewise, the number of private medical colleges has also shown steady growth since 2018. The count stood at 248 private medical colleges in 2018-19, which increased to 260 in 2019-20, 269 in 2020-21, 290 in 2021-22, and 293 in 2022-23.
